Artwork & Design

Think carefully about how you want the finished product to look, and give us as much information as you can about the position and colours of all objects, pictures, logos and text. A simple, clear message will generally be more effective than a complicated one. We prefer digital images in PC format via email as an attachment, or on a floppy disk, 100 MB Zip cartridges or CD.

Be aware that the colours you see on your computer monitor are the result of your particular drawing/paint programme / computer processor / available memory / graphics card / monitor set-up, etc., and will probably look different on other systems, and when printed. We use the Pantone Colour Reference system to ensure the printed colours are as intended.

Spot Colour Printing

We prefer vector images such as CorelDraw CDR files (to v10), Illustrator AI (up to v9) or editable (vector) EPS files, as these allow editing and re-scaling without image degradation, and easy colour separation, but we can accept most standard formats. As a general rule, halftones and gradient fills should be avoided with spot colour screen printing, due to the low print resolutions of the screens. It is useful also to send the image in a second format, such as a jpg file, to allow us to cross-check the layout.

Word, Publisher and Powerpoint files should be avoided.

If a particular font is required, either supply the PC font file (*.ttf), or convert the text to curves/outlines. If the design is in Quark Express, either PC or Macintosh, save the file as an eps file, open the eps file in Illustrator, then convert all text to outlines, ensure any bitmaps are embedded, and re-save in eps format (up to v9). This renders the file platform-independent and avoids ‘missing fonts’ issues.

Any special colours required should either have the Pantone Colour Reference supplied, or a suitable colour sample to allow us to colour match.

Any images to be reproduced that are supplied to us as printed hard copy should be printed as colour separations. They should be a strong, black print on white paper, at 600 dpi or better. Remember that the final print cannot be better than your original.

Full Colour Printing

Images for full process colour (CMYK) printing should be saved as *.tif files at 300 dpi, and preferably compressed using ‘Zip’ or similar techniques. We can accept *.jpg files instead of *.tif files, but be aware that some sharpness and detail in the image can be lost if the compression setting during the saving process is set too high.

Any special colours required should either have the Pantone Colour Reference, the CMYK setting or a suitable colour sample supplied, to allow us to colour match as close as possible.
